The pattern of a difficult conversation often mirrors the pattern of the whole relationship. The same defensive crouch, the same sudden escalations, the same awkward retreat. A five-minute argument contains the ghost of a five-year struggle.
You see it in organizations. The way a team of four debates a minor feature is a perfect miniature of how the company of 400 fails to set a clear strategy. The same players occupy the same roles—the visionary who won’t engage with details, the pragmatist who kills momentum, the mediator who smooths over the essential conflict.

The classic question, the one that unlocks this way of seeing, is: How long is the coastline of Britain?
The obvious answer is that the length is a fixed, measurable fact. But Benoît Mandelbrot showed this is an illusion. The answer depends entirely on the length of your ruler.
Measure with a yardstick a mile long, and you get one number, striding over bays and inlets. Measure with a one-foot ruler, and you get a much longer number, as you are now forced to trace the smaller wiggles. Measure with a one-inch ruler and the length increases again.
If you could measure with a ruler the size of a single grain of sand, the coastline would appear almost infinitely long.
There is no "true" length. The roughness of the coast has a consistent character, a similar quality of jaggedness, as you zoom in.
This is the signature of reality. Smoothness is the exception, an artifact of our models. Roughness is the rule.

We can distinguish between the perfect, rigid self-similarity of a mathematical object like a Koch snowflake, and the statistical self-similarity of a natural one.
A head of Romanesco broccoli is a near-perfect natural fractal; each floret is a miniature version of the whole. But a cloud, a mountain range, a river delta, or a lightning bolt are more unruly. Their parts don’t repeat a formal rule. Instead, they share a texture, a character, a statistical flavor.
A small branch of a tree is not an exact copy of the whole tree, but it is unmistakably "tree-like." The pattern of branching, the ratio of thickness, the angle of the twigs—these qualities recur. The part echoes the whole.

The Zoom Test: When confronted with a complex problem, zoom in and zoom out. Does the pattern of dysfunction look familiar at different levels of magnification?
The way a company handles a single customer complaint often reveals its entire approach to market feedback.
The way a state fails to maintain a small rural bridge often reveals the same institutional paralysis that prevents it from upgrading its national infrastructure.
We tend to treat these as separate problems of different magnitudes, but often they are just the same problem, viewed through a different lens. The underlying logic of the system is scale-invariant.
