We spend our lives pushing on heavy doors. We mistake effort for effect.
The search for leverage begins with a shift in sensation: from the feeling of brute force to the feeling of a well-oiled hinge. The safecracker does not drill through the steel; she listens for the faint click of the tumblers. The acupuncturist does not perform surgery; she finds the point that redirects the flow of energy.
Where is the system’s hinge?

We are trained to spot the symptoms, the visible points of failure. The budget deficit, the overflowing inbox, the falling metric. These are the places that scream for intervention.
But these are almost never the leverage points. They are the indicators.
To intervene at the level of the symptom is to bail water from a boat that has a hole in it. The work is visible, frantic, even heroic. But it is endless. The real point of leverage is the hole itself. The work of finding and plugging it is quiet, often invisible, and requires a different kind of seeing.
The most obvious points for intervention are usually the least effective. The system’s structure actively misdirects our attention. It invites us to fiddle with the numbers, to optimize the existing flows, to work harder within the same broken logic.

A useful distinction: Are we pulling a lever or just adjusting a dial?
Adjusting a parameter—a tax rate, a budget allocation, a hiring target—is turning a dial. The effects are linear, predictable, and often temporary. The system’s behavior doesn’t fundamentally change.
Pulling a lever reconfigures the system itself. It changes a rule, alters a feedback loop, or redirects an information flow.
When the cholera epidemic hit London in 1854, the dials were things like the number of hospital beds and the quantity of medicine distributed. The lever, discovered by John Snow, was the handle of the Broad Street water pump. Removing it didn’t cure a single person. It changed the structure of the system that was making them sick.
The highest-leverage interventions are often not in the flow of materials or money, but in the flow of information. Who knows what? Who gets to know? When? Granting tenants access to data on a building's energy use is a far higher-leverage act than simply replacing the lightbulbs.

R. Buckminster Fuller’s favorite metaphor for leverage was the trim tab.
A trim tab is a miniature rudder on the edge of a ship's main rudder. It is a rudder for the rudder. To turn the massive ship, the captain doesn’t wrestle with the giant rudder directly. Instead, a tiny wheel on the bridge applies a slight pressure to the trim tab.
This tiny rudder moves easily, creating a pressure differential in the water that swings the main rudder, which in turn swings the entire ship.
This is the character of an elegant intervention. Indirect. Seemingly small. It uses the energy of the system itself to move the system.

The deepest leverage points are the hardest to see because they are the water we swim in. They are the goals of the system, the values it serves, the paradigm out of which it is born.
**What is this system for?** According to whom?
Changing the stated goal of a system—from, say, “maximizing shareholder value” to “creating sustainable prosperity for all stakeholders”—seems like cheap talk. But if taken seriously, it is the ultimate trim tab. It forces every rule, every feedback loop, and every parameter to eventually realign.
Pushing on these points often feels impossible. The resistance is enormous. The system protects its paradigm more fiercely than it protects any single number.
Perhaps this is the final clue. The place of greatest leverage is often the place of greatest, most irrational resistance. It’s the thing you’re told not to question.
