The Hum of the System

We exist inside causal loops whose signals arrive like ghosts from the past, often leading us to mistake the feeling of control for the reality of collapse.

The Hum of the System

To be inside a reinforcing loop is to feel a powerful, accelerating current. The initial nudge, the small success, the first few dollars of interest—they attract more of the same. The process feeds itself. Success breeds success; panic breeds panic. From the inside, it feels like its own form of gravity, a natural and obvious momentum. It is the feeling of a snowball gathering mass, of a fire catching, of a market bubble inflating. The hum is one of exponential growth. We are very good at noticing this hum.

The hum of a balancing loop is different. It is the feeling of being tethered to a goal. A thermostat doesn’t just measure temperature; it compares that measurement against a target and triggers a change. It is goal-seeking. From the inside, this can feel like stability, equilibrium, stubbornness, or being stuck in a rut. A market price stabilizing, a body regulating its temperature, an ecosystem maintaining its population balance. The system pushes back against deviation. It seeks stasis.

The most important information in a system is often invisible, delayed, or misunderstood.

Feedback is a ghost. The information arriving now is about a state that has already passed. This delay is where systems get interesting, and where they often break down.

The classic example is the shower in an old hotel. You turn the knob. The water is too cold. You turn it further. Nothing. You turn it much further. A moment later, you’re scalded. You overcorrected because the feedback (the water temperature on your skin) was dramatically delayed from your intervention (turning the knob).

This pattern of oscillation born from delay is everywhere. It’s the "bullwhip effect" in supply chains, where a small change in consumer demand creates wild, ever-amplifying swings in orders further up the chain. It’s the boom-and-bust cycles in economies and commodity markets. By the time the signal of "success" or "scarcity" has propagated through the system, the conditions have changed, and the frantic reactions of the players only make the oscillation worse.

We are steering by looking at the wake.

A critical question becomes: What is the delay between action and feedback in this system? And what happens in that gap?

Consider the North Atlantic cod fishery. For decades, fishermen used ever-improving technology to pull in massive hauls. The feedback was the daily catch total. It was clear, immediate, and positive. The reinforcing loop was powerful: bigger catches funded better technology, which produced bigger catches.

But that feedback signal was a lie. It wasn't measuring the health of the cod population; it was measuring the effectiveness of the hunt. The true feedback—the reproductive rate of the cod, the health of the underlying stock—operated on a timescale of years. By the time that signal arrived in the form of plummeting catches, the system had already driven itself past the point of no return. The balancing loop (nature’s ability to replenish) was overwhelmed by the reinforcing loop (humanity’s ability to extract).

We often think we are in a simple, linear chain of cause and effect when we are, in fact, caught in a loop. We blame events, not structures.

A useful distinction: feedback as information versus feedback as causal structure. We ask for "feedback" on a presentation. But the system itself—the wiring of incentives, delays, and goals—is feedback. The world is constantly giving feedback through its behavior, not its words.

The work is to stop seeing single events and start sensing the hum of the loops we inhabit. To ask: What is this system actually set up to do? What is its implicit goal? And by the time the signal reaches me, how much has the world already changed?
